Young scholars program at the university of chicago

The program will take place in-person with all particpants following UIC's Covid safety guidelines. Students who were in high school in or who will be in high school in are eligible for the Summer YSP program rising graders and just-graduated 12th graders. Participants will be divided into two groups based on age and school year. The two sessions will each have a different focus mathematically and in terms of applications.

The sessions will each be independent; it is not necessary to attend the first session to attend the second. How can mathematics be used to study, understand, and predict phenomena in the real world? Many different branches of mathematics were invented to study and predict observed behavior in nature or in human systems. During this session we will focus on the following questions: How does one come up with a mathematical model to fit a particular situation? What mathematical and computational techniques can we use to analyze a mathematical model?

Students from outside the area can apply if they have their own lodging and transportation usually participants from out-of-state will stay with relatives. The aim of the program is to strengthen the participants' mathematical powers through a deep experience in mathematical thought and effort.

Our intention is to broaden and enrich the students' understanding of mathematics rather than to accelerate them through the standard high school curriculum. Students are encouraged to engage in active problem solving and are challenged to broaden their understanding of mathematics. Students will spend 3 weeks immersed in an online academic, credit-bearing course. These courses typically require hours of work daily, comprised of engagement with faculty, teaching assistants, or peers, and also including time spent on homework, problem sets, papers, or other independent work.

For the academic courses, Woodson Summer Scholars will be in class with students from other scholarship programs. Students will be graded for their work and receive a grade for the course. As a culmination of their academic course, students will then join their peers on campus to participate in Phoenix Week, where they will live in residence for the week. Phoenix Week is designed to introduce students to UChicago, prepare them for college-level work, provide insight to the highly selective admissions process, and allow for students in the program to get to know each other.

Participation in Phoenix Week is required to receive their certificate of completion. Applications will be accepted online beginning early January If you have questions, please email the Collegiate Scholars Program at uccsp uchicago. Early exposure to that was essential to my success — and my experience in diverse classrooms prepared me to have deeper conversations with professors and fellow students than what my peers were ready for.
